Grayson’s Story
Grayson had been ill for several months before he was surrendered to Neuse River. But the diagnostic workup and care was too much for the previous owner. He arrived at our vet partner and although the initial plan was to keep him there for a couple of days, it quickly became apparent he needed much more intensive care.
We took him straight to the NCSU Vet school the same day and he was admitted. His ammonia level was 400! Normal levels are 10 – 30. Because toxins were building in his bloodstream he was also beginning to show neurological symptoms and was ataxic. That means he had poor muscle control and was having difficulty walking.
He was admitted to the hospital and remained there for the next 3 days receiving supportive care. His ammonia levels began to drop but he still needed to begin taking anti-epileptic medications to prevent seizures. Due to his condition, he was at risk for seizures. Grayson was diagnosed with a liver shunt but because he was so young, a CT scan would not provide much information. He would have to wait until he was 10 months old in order for the scan to show the details of his vessels.
And that day is here! Grayson will have his CT scan in April 2024 and we will find out if his condition is operable. We are all praying for good news and will keep everyone posted on his progress!
