Hurricane Florence Relief

The wind and floods from Hurricane Florence have directly impacted many animal shelters across the Eastern Carolina's and there is an urgent need for supplies and volunteers. Below is some information about ways you can help our animal community in this time of need. We will try to keep the information up to date as much as possible.

NRGRR is partnering with the TeddyRox Foundation and AniMall to collect, organize and dispatch supplies to the Eastern North Carolina shelters in need from the effects of Hurricane Florence.

The greatest need continues to be for transporters to get supplies to the shelters in need. If you can help, please contact Nancy Cawthon directly at and let her know your availability and the vehicle you will use. If you cannot help right now but possibly can help in the future, please let her know that also. We will continue to support the eastern counties long after the news cameras are gone.

To see the most up to date needs and stories of the effort, you can also follow the TeddyRox Foundation's Facebook Page.

As of October 19th: Over the past 5 weeks TeddyRox has distributed over 40,000 lbs of food and supplies to shelters, rescues and pet food pantries affected by Hurricane Florence or helping with relief and recovery efforts. September 25th: AniMall in Cary recently received a semi-truck load of donations from Pennsylvania. Thanks to everyone who helped unload the supplies! Click here to see a CBS17 news story about this wonderful donation.

Here are other ways you can help:

1. Offer to foster if you can.
All of the local rescues are taking in dogs and cats that have been displaced, abandoned, lost and otherwise in need of shelter and care. FOSTERING is always one of the biggest needs. Here is a list of rescues taking in animals, but there are MANY other rescue organizations in need as well:

Fostering a dog means the rescues can help save more lives. You can also foster for the local SPCA and Wake County shelter or a shelter in your county. Fostering from a local shelter creates space for more surrendered animals and reduces the number of animals euthanized.

2. Make a donation to Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue. General donations to NRGRR help us take in dogs from area shelters freeing space for new rescued animals.

Donate to the NRGRR All It Takes Is Love! Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament. All proceeds from this tournament go to supporting rescues and shelters in eastern North Carolina (as was the plan before Hurricane Florence). In fact, this tournament had to be postponed due to the impacts from Florence. If you are a tennis player and want to participate, there are still spots available. The tournament has been rescheduled for October 13th and 14th. Click here for more information about the tournament and to register. Also, please consider becoming a sponsor of the tennis tournament.

3. Make a donation to the TeddyRox FoundationTeddyRox was founded by two NRGRR volunteers who pulled many dogs from local shelters and saw so many rural shelters in Eastern NC that were in dire need of funding to care for the abundance of animals they were taking in. Most shelters are grossly underfunded and therefore animals are euthanized because there isn’t enough money to even feed them. With the TeddyRox Foundation 100% of your donations goes to support local shelters. TeddyRox is dedicated to helping save as many lives as possible and getting animals into foster homes and eventually “forever homes.”

Follow TeddyRox's efforts to save animals impacted by Hurricane Florence by following their Facebook page.

4. Drop off donations to local animal hospitals and businesses. The TeddyRox Foundation is collecting donations of supplies at the locations below. The donated items will be distributed to impacted shelters and evacuation centers as soon as the flood waters recede.
We suggest that you call the locations to verify they are still collecting before you drop off.
